Dan E. Moldea, born February 27, 1950, is an American best-selling author and investigative journalist specializing in organized crime and political corruption since 1974.
Of Romanian descent, he earned a bachelor's degree in English and history from the University of Akron, where he served as student-body president, and pursued post-graduate work at Kent State University, teaching a course on racism and poverty in the Honors and Experimental College.
Dan E. Moldea launched his career with the 1978 book The Hoffa Wars: Teamsters, Rebels, Politicians, and the Mob, chronicling Jimmy Hoffa's rise and fall, followed by The Hunting of Cain in 1983, detailing the contract murder of Ohio businessman Dean Milo, for which he obtained taped confessions from conspirators.

His subsequent works exposed Mafia infiltration in Hollywood and its ties to Ronald Reagan in Dark Victory (1986), organized crime's influence on professional football in Interference (1989), and delved into high-profile cases including the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy in The Killing of Robert F. Kennedy (1995), the O.J. Simpson investigation in Evidence Dismissed (1997) co-authored with LAPD detectives Tom Lange and Philip Vannatter, and Vincent Foster's suicide in A Washington Tragedy (1998).
Later books encompassed his memoir Confessions of a Guerrilla Writer (2013, third edition 2020 with new Hoffa details), the Anthony Pellicano wiretapping scandal in Hollywood Confidential (2018), and corruption in U.S. higher education through student loans and for-profit colleges in Money, Politics, and Corruption in U.S. Higher Education (2020).
He has lectured nationwide on the Mafia, appeared on radio and television, featured in the 2004 film The Hunting of the President, and served as former president of Washington Independent Writers and national vice president of the National Writers Union.
A notable controversy arose from a 1989 New York Times review of Interference, which Moldea sued over as libelous, claiming it falsely portrayed him as incompetent and devastated his career; the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit reinstated his case in Moldea I (1994) but reversed in Moldea II, a decision upheld by the Supreme Court.
Since 1998, as a registered private investigator, he has worked as an independent consultant on various investigations, describing himself as obsessed with the Jimmy Hoffa case like Ahab with his white whale.
