BREAKING NEWS: Sir Patrick Stewart Dies at 86, Family Says

Sir Patrick Stewart, the acclaimed British actor known worldwide for his roles as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise, has died at the age of 86. According to statements reported by multiple news organizations, Patrick Stewart died on October 28, 2026, at his home in Los Angeles.

A statement released through his longtime spokesperson said the actor died following “a brief and poignant journey” with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia, conditions that had not previously been disclosed publicly. Reports said he was surrounded by family, friends, and his wife, Sunny Ozell, during his final days.

The family requested that memorial donations be directed to the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Fund and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America instead of sending flowers.

Born on July 13, 1940, in Yorkshire, England, Patrick Stewart built a distinguished career across theater, television, film, and voice acting. He spent years with the Royal Shakespeare Company before becoming an internationally recognized screen star.

Patrick Stewart gained global fame as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, a role he portrayed from 1987 through the series’ seven-season run and later reprised in feature films and Star Trek: Picard.

He later achieved another iconic role as Professor Charles Xavier, leader of the X-Men, beginning with the 2000 film X-Men. His portrayal became one of the defining performances of the superhero genre.

Throughout his career, he earned numerous accolades, including Olivier Awards, a Grammy Award, and multiple nominations for Emmy, Golden Globe, Tony, and Screen Actors Guild awards. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2010 for services to drama.

Beyond acting, Patrick Stewart was recognized for his advocacy on issues including human rights, support for survivors of domestic violence, refugee causes, veterans’ mental health, and animal welfare.

Following news of his death, tributes arrived from colleagues, friends, and fans around the world. Actor Hugh Jackman, who appeared alongside Stewart in several X-Men films, described him as “one of the greats of stage and screen.” Fellow actor Sir Ian McKellen, a longtime friend and collaborator, also paid tribute to Stewart’s talent, integrity, and decades-long contribution to theater and film.

Marvel confirmed that his final on-screen appearance as Professor X will be in Avengers: Doomsday, marking the end of a role he portrayed for more than a quarter century.

Few actors successfully bridged classical theater and blockbuster entertainment on the scale Patrick Stewart achieved. His performances in Shakespearean productions, Star Trek, and X-Men helped shape modern popular culture while earning admiration from audiences across generations.
