RJ Mitte, ‘Breaking Bad’ Star and Disability Rights Advocate, Dies at 34

Actor RJ Mitte, best known for portraying Walter White Jr. (also known as Flynn) in the acclaimed AMC drama Breaking Bad, has died at the age of 34. His death was confirmed on October 12, 2026, by his representatives and local authorities in Brownsville, Texas.

According to a statement released through RJ Mitte's representatives, the actor died in Brownsville, Texas. The statement described him as a “beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate,” but initially did not disclose the circumstances surrounding his death.

Authorities in Cameron County, Texas, confirmed that Mitte was pronounced dead on October 12. An autopsy was expected to be conducted, and officials initially said the cause of death had not been determined publicly.

Subsequent reports from entertainment and media outlets cited statements from representatives indicating that Mitte died by suicide. However, official investigative findings have not been publicly detailed in full, and reporting has continued to emphasize the ongoing nature of the investigation.

RJ Mitte rose to international prominence as Walter “Flynn” White Jr., the son of Bryan Cranston's Walter White and Anna Gunn's Skyler White in Breaking Bad. The series aired from 2008 to 2013 and is widely regarded as one of the greatest television dramas ever produced. It won 16 Emmy Awards, including two for Outstanding Drama Series.

Mitte appeared throughout the show's five-season run. His character, who lived with cerebral palsy, became an important emotional anchor in the story as Walter White's criminal life increasingly affected his family.

Like his character, RJ Mitte lived with cerebral palsy. Diagnosed at age three, he drew on his own experiences to portray Walter Jr., helping bring authentic disability representation to mainstream television.

His representatives said that he “brought authenticity to the role and built a platform on disability awareness and inclusion,” using his visibility in Hollywood to challenge stereotypes and advocate for broader opportunities for people with disabilities.

Beyond his acting career, he was an active disability rights advocate. He served as an ambassador for organizations including United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children's, and was involved in philanthropic efforts through the Mitte Foundation.

He also worked to promote accessibility and inclusion in the entertainment industry and supported initiatives focused on people living with disabilities.

Following Breaking Bad, RJ Mitte appeared in a variety of television and film projects, including Switched at Birth, The Guardians of Justice, The Recall, The Oak Room, and the 2021 film Triumph, in which he played a high school wrestler with cerebral palsy.

In the weeks before his death, he was promoting the film Talking to Strangers and remained active in acting and advocacy work.

His impact extended beyond entertainment. Through his performances and advocacy, he helped increase visibility for people with disabilities and became a prominent voice for inclusion in Hollywood and beyond. His portrayal of Walter White Jr. remains one of the most recognized representations of a character with cerebral palsy in television history.
