Adrienne Shelly, born Adrienne Levine on June 24, 1966, in Queens, New York City, was an American actress, film director, and screenwriter. She became known for her roles in independent films such as Hal Hartley's "The Unbelievable Truth" (1989) and "Trust" (1990).
Adrienne Shelly also wrote, directed, and co-starred in the film "Waitress" (2007), which was released posthumously and later adapted into a Broadway musical.

Tragically, her life was cut short when she was murdered on November 1, 2006, in her New York City apartment. Her death was initially ruled a suicide, but her husband, Andy Ostroy, insisted on a re-evaluation, which led to the conviction of a construction worker for first-degree manslaughter.
In her memory, the Adrienne Shelly Foundation was established to support artists through scholarships, production grants, finishing funds, and living stipends.
The Women Film Critics Circle also gives an annual Adrienne Shelly Award to the film that most passionately opposes violence against women.
