Albert Einstein, born on March 14, 1879, in Ulm, Kingdom of Württemberg, German Empire, and died on April 18, 1955, in Princeton, New Jersey, U.S., was a German-born theoretical physicist who is widely regarded as one of the most influential scientists of all time.
Albert Einstein was raised in a secular Jewish family. His father, Hermann Einstein, was originally a featherbed salesman and later ran an electrochemical factory with moderate success.
His mother, Pauline Koch, ran the family household. He had one sister, Maria (who went by the name Maja), born two years after Albert.
His fascination with science was sparked at an early age when he encountered a compass at age five and was mystified that invisible forces could deflect the needle. This led to a lifelong fascination with invisible forces.
He was married twice. His first wife was Mileva Marić, a Serbian physics student whom he had met at school in Zurich. They had three children: a daughter, Lieserl, and two sons, Hans Albert and Eduard.
After a period of unrest, Einstein and Marić divorced in 1919. During his marriage, Einstein had begun an affair with his cousin Elsa Löwenthal. They were married in 1919, the same year he divorced Marić.

Albert Einstein is best known for developing the theory of relativity, but he also made significant contributions to quantum mechanics.
He was a central figure in the revolutionary reshaping of the scientific understanding of nature that modern physics accomplished in the first decades of the 20th century. His mass–energy equivalence formula E = mc^2, which arises from relativity theory, has been called "the world's most famous equation".
After studying at the ETH university in Zurich, Albert Einstein worked at the patent office in Bern, during which time he produced several pioneering works in the field of physics. He was later employed at universities in Bern, Zurich, and Prague, and from 1914, in Berlin. In 1921, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his explanation of the photoelectric effect.
