Raised in a musically inclined family, her mother was a dance teacher, and her father was the lead singer of a local band, which fostered her early interest in performing arts.

She began singing and dancing at the age of three and won the talent show "Star Search" at the age of five, becoming the youngest contestant ever to win the competition. Her early career included appearances in films such as "Parenthood" and "Stella," and she gained widespread recognition for her role in the 1991 film "Curly Sue" opposite Jim Belushi.
