Alison Lohman was born on September 18, 1979, in Palm Springs, California, to Diane Dunham, a patisserie owner, and Gary Lohman, an architect. She grew up with her younger brother Robert and developed an early interest in performing arts.

By the age of nine, she had already landed her first professional role as Gretl in "The Sound of Music" at the McCallum Theater in Palm Desert. Two years later, she won the Desert Theater League's award for Most Outstanding Actress in a Musical for the title role in "Annie."

Alison Lohman also performed locally as a child singer, featuring as a solo vocalist alongside Frank Sinatra at a benefit event in Palm Springs.

Her academic achievements were notable as well, earning top grades in high school except for drama, where she struggled with shyness. Despite receiving a full scholarship to attend New York University, she chose to pursue an acting career directly and moved to Los Angeles in 1997.
