Amy Schumer

Amy Beth Schumer, born on June 1, 1981, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York City, is an American stand-up comedian, actress, writer, producer, and director. She is the daughter of Sandra Jane (née Jones), a homemaker, and Gordon David Schumer, who owned a baby furniture company.

Her father was born into a Jewish family from Ukraine, and her mother converted to Judaism before their marriage. Amy is also a second cousin, once removed, of U.S. Senator and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Amy Schumer grew up in Long Island, New York, after her father developed multiple sclerosis and his business folded. She responded to adversity with humor and honed her performance skills, earning a theater degree from Towson University in 2003. She began her comedy career in the early 2000s and gained significant exposure as a contestant on the NBC reality competition series "Last Comic Standing" in 2007. Although she finished fourth, the exposure elevated her profile.

She also wrote and starred in the semi-autobiographical comedy film "Trainwreck" (2015), directed by Judd Apatow, which was a critical and commercial success.
