Ann Sothern, born Harriette Arlene Lake on January 22, 1909, in Valley City, North Dakota, was an American actress whose career spanned nearly six decades. She began her career in the late 1920s with bit parts in films and made her Broadway stage debut in 1930.
Ann Sothern is best known for her role as Maisie Ravier, a brash yet lovable Brooklyn showgirl, in the film series "Maisie" (1939-1947).

In 1953, she starred in the television sitcom "Private Secretary," which earned her three Primetime Emmy Award nominations. She later starred in another sitcom, "The Ann Sothern Show" (1958-1961). Ann Sothern was also the voice of the 1928 Porter in the camp classic "My Mother the Car" (1965).
In 1987, she received her only Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "The Whales of August" (1987). Ann Sothern retired from acting in 1987 and passed away on March 15, 2001, in Ketchum, Idaho.
