Anne Ramsey, born Anne Mobley on March 27, 1929, in Omaha, Nebraska, was an American character actress known for her distinctive, often gruff voice and memorable performances in film and television. She was the daughter of Eleanor Smith, the former national treasurer of the Girl Scouts of the USA, and Nathan Mobley, an insurance executive.
Her early education took place at Rosemary Hall, an elite girls' school in Greenwich, Connecticut, and she later attended Bennington College, where she developed an interest in theatre.

Anne Ramsey began her career with numerous on- and off-Broadway productions before moving to Hollywood in the early 1970s. She gained recognition for her roles in films such as "Goin' South" (1978), "Any Which Way You Can" (1980), and "The Goonies" (1985), where she played the memorable character Mama Fratelli.
Her performance in "Throw Momma from the Train" (1987) as Mrs. Lift earned her nominations for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Her career was unfortunately cut short by throat cancer, which she battled bravely. She underwent surgery that removed parts of her tongue and jaw, affecting her speech, but she continued to work until her death.
Anne Ramsey passed away on August 11, 1988, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 59.
