She is the daughter of stock analyst Richard Lion Russell and Constance Russell, and her grandfather was the renowned journalist and educator Max Lerner.

Betsy She attended Mission Bay High School and later pursued a degree in Spiritual Psychology at the University of Santa Monica.

Russell began her career with a Pepsi commercial at the age of 16 and quickly transitioned to acting, making her screen debut in the 1982 film "Let's Do It!". Her breakout role came in the 1983 film "Private School," where she played Jordan Leigh-Jensen, a role that established her as a rising star in Hollywood.
