She began her career with minor TV appearances before making her film debut in "Easy Rider" (1969) and "Rabbit, Run" (1970).
Her performance in "Diary of a Mad Housewife" earned her critical acclaim, but she decided to leave acting to live with musician Neil Young, with whom she had a son, Zeke.
