Charles Spencer Chaplin was born on April 16, 1889, in London, England. He was the son of music hall entertainers, Charles Chaplin Sr. and Hannah Hill. His early life was marked by poverty and hardship, especially after his parents separated.

His mother struggled financially and was later committed to a mental asylum, leaving young Charlie and his half-brother Sydney to fend for themselves.

Charles Chaplin began performing at a young age, joining a clog-dancing troupe called the Eight Lancashire Lads. He later worked as a stage actor and comedian, eventually joining Fred Karno's company, which took him to the United States. In 1914, he was scouted by Keystone Studios and began his film career. He soon created his iconic character, the Tramp, and became a worldwide sensation.

His career spanned over 75 years, during which he wrote, directed, produced, and starred in numerous films. Some of his most famous works include "The Kid" (1921), "The Gold Rush" (1925), "City Lights" (1931), "Modern Times" (1936), and "The Great Dictator" (1940). Despite the advent of sound in cinema, Charles Chaplin continued to make silent films for a time, believing in their universal appeal.

Charles Chaplin married four times and had eleven children. His first marriage was to actress Mildred Harris, followed by Lita Grey, Paulette Goddard, and finally Oona O'Neill, with whom he remained until his death. His children include actors Geraldine Chaplin and Michael Chaplin.

Throughout his career, he received numerous awards and honors. He won three Academy Awards, including two honorary Oscars for his contributions to cinema. In 1972, he received a 12-minute standing ovation at the Oscars, one of the longest in history. His films "The Gold Rush," "City Lights," "Modern Times," and "The Great Dictator" are often listed among the greatest films ever made.

His influence on cinema and comedy is immeasurable. He passed away on December 25, 1977, in Corsier-sur-Vevey, Switzerland, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire filmmakers and entertainers around the world.
