Charlotte Rae was born Charlotte Rae Lubotsky on April 22, 1926, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Russian Jewish immigrant parents, Esther and Meyer Lubotsky. Her father owned a retail tire business, and her mother was a childhood friend of Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir.
She was the middle child between her sisters Beverly and Miriam (Mimi). She graduated from Shorewood High School in 1944 and attended Northwestern University, where she met future actress Cloris Leachman. Although she did not complete her studies, she began her career as a stage actress in New York City.

Her career spanned over six decades, starting with her Broadway debut in the musical "Three Wishes for Jamie" in 1952. She later appeared in "Pickwick," for which she was nominated for a Tony Award.
In 1978, she landed the role of Edna Garrett on the sitcom "Diff'rent Strokes," which led to her starring role in the spin-off series "The Facts of Life" from 1979 to 1986. Her portrayal of Edna Garrett earned her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination in 1982.
Charlotte Rae was also a talented singer. She released her first album, "Songs I Taught My Mother," in 1955, composed by her husband, John Strauss. She continued to work in television and theater, appearing in shows like "Car 54, Where Are You?" and "Queen of the Stardust Ballroom," for which she received another Emmy nomination.
Her autobiography, "The Facts of My Life," was published in 2015, co-written with her son, Larry Strauss. She passed away on August 5, 2018, at the age of 92.
