After graduating high school with honors in 1981, she transitioned to acting, landing a recurring role as scatterbrained Suzi Wyatt Carter on the daytime soap opera Search for Tomorrow, where she appeared for two years.
She joined the cast of the NBC series Fame in 1983 as drama student Holly Laird, performing in 45 episodes over three seasons and singing numbers like "Out Here on My Own" and "We're All the Same," earning a Young Artist Award nomination in 1984.
