Deborah M. Pratt (born December 16, 1951) is an American director, writer, producer, and actress best known as the co-creator, executive producer, and head writer of the science fiction television series “Quantum Leap.”

Born in Chicago, Illinois, she studied psychology and theatre at Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree before embarking on a career in entertainment.

After winning a nationwide talent search, she moved to Hollywood under contract to NBC, where she began working as a singer and songwriter, performing on multiple albums while building parallel careers in acting, writing, and producing.​

Her early acting work included guest and recurring roles on television series such as “Police Woman,” “Happy Days,” and other network shows of the late 1970s and early 1980s, and she gradually moved behind the camera as a writer and producer.

She eventually co-created “Quantum Leap,” serving as executive producer and head writer on the original series for NBC, for which she wrote or co-wrote dozens of episodes and provided the voice of the computer Ziggy. Her leadership on the show made her one of the pioneering Black women showrunners in American genre television, and her storytelling has been credited with shaping the series’ emphasis on empathy, social issues, and moral choices.​

Beyond “Quantum Leap,” Deborah  Pratt executive produced and worked as head writer on the CBS series “Tequila and Bonetti” and co-created and executive produced the television adaptation of “The Net” for USA Network.

She has written for multiple television series and sold feature scripts to major studios including Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox Animation, extending her influence across television and film. A graduate of the American Film Institute’s Directing Workshop for Women, she made her directorial debut with the acclaimed television film “Cora Unashamed” (2000) for BBC, PBS, and Masterpiece Theatre’s “The American Collection,” further establishing her as a multifaceted filmmaker.​​

Deborah Pratt is also an author and playwright, having created and written science fiction and fantasy novels and stage works, and she continues to develop feature films and theatrical projects, including historical and socially engaged narratives.

In the 2020s she returned to the “Quantum Leap” universe as an executive producer on the rebooted series, directing episodes and participating in efforts to expand the property into a feature film. Her career has been recognized with multiple honors, including several Emmy nominations, a Golden Globe nomination, the Lillian Gish Award from Women in Film, the Angel Award, the Golden Block Award, and multiple Black Emmy Nominees (B.E.N.) Awards.​​

In her personal life, Deborah Pratt was married to television producer and writer Donald P. Bellisario from 1984 until their divorce in 1991, and they have two children, including actress Troian Bellisario and computer engineer Nicholas Bellisario.

She has been an outspoken advocate for women and minorities in the entertainment industry, frequently speaking about the challenges and responsibilities of representation in media.
