She began her career in theater before transitioning to film and television. She gained widespread recognition for her role as Holly in Woody Allen's "Hannah and Her Sisters" (1986), for which she won her first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

She won her second Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Bullets Over Broadway" (1994), also directed by Woody Allen.
