She grew up in a Jewish family, with her father running a newsstand in downtown Manhattan. She attended Sheepshead Bay High School and later studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Her career began to take off when she was cast as Annette in the iconic film "Saturday Night Fever" in 1977. This role earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress from the New York Film Critics Circle.

Following her success in "Saturday Night Fever," she starred in her own television series, "Angie," which aired from 1979 to 1980. She also appeared in the long-running sitcom "Out of This World" from 1987 to 1991 and the Disney Channel sitcom "Even Stevens" from 2000 to 2003.
