Dr. Phil McGraw

Phillip Calvin McGraw, known professionally as Dr. Phil, was born on September 1, 1950, in Vinita, Oklahoma. He is an American television personality and author, best known for hosting the talk show Dr. Phil. McGraw holds a doctorate in clinical psychology, although he ceased renewing his license to practice psychology in 2006.

He rose to fame with appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show in the late 1990s, where Oprah Winfrey helped him launch his own program, Dr. Phil, in September 2002. The show is formatted as an advice show, where McGraw addresses various mental health and personal issues faced by his guests.

His lifestyle reflects his diverse interests and active personality. He is an avid tennis player, golfer, and scuba diver. He also holds a black belt in Tang Soo Do, a Korean martial art, and is a licensed pilot who often flies himself to various speaking engagements and television appearances.

His career began after obtaining his doctorate when he rejoined his father in Wichita Falls, Texas, where the elder McGraw had established his private psychology practice. In 1985, he and his father partnered with Thelma Box, a Texas businesswoman, in presenting "Pathways" self-help seminars.

In 1990, he co-founded Courtroom Sciences, Inc. (CSI), a trial consulting firm, with lawyer Gary Dobbs. CSI performed "dry runs" of court cases in simulated courtrooms, and McGraw offered advice about what parts of the lawyer's case worked and what parts did not. His work at CSI was so unique that it inspired the hit CBS primetime series, Bull, starring Michael Weatherly.

Throughout his career, he has received numerous accolades and recognition. He was honored with the Presidential Citation by the American Psychological Association in 2006 for his significant contributions to the field of psychology.

He has received 31 Emmy nominations and won five PRISM Awards for the accurate depiction of drug, alcohol, and tobacco abuse and addiction. He also received a MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers) Media Award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in February 2020.
