Eleanor Powell was born on November 21, 1912, in Springfield, Massachusetts, to Clarence Gardner Powell and Blanche Torrey Powell. Her father left when she was just two years old, and she was raised by her mother and maternal grandparents. As a child, she was painfully shy, but her mother enrolled her in dance lessons at age 11 to help her overcome this.
She showed a natural aptitude for movement and was soon discovered by Gus Edwards while performing acrobatics on a beach in Atlantic City.
Eleanor Powell began her professional career at the age of 12, performing acrobatic acts in Atlantic City. She moved to New York City in 1927, where she trained in tap dancing and eventually made her Broadway debut in 1929.
