After college, Elizabeth M. Tamposi worked for her family's Tamposi Company, rising to vice president and partner, and later became president and sole shareholder of Hollis Crossing Realty, Inc., a real estate marketing and sales firm.
She entered politics in 1979 when elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives, where she served four consecutive terms, chaired the House Ways and Means Committee, acted as Assistant Majority Leader, and sponsored the state's innovative "Rainy Day Fund," a $20 million reserve enacted in 1986 to address revenue shortfalls.
In 1988 she sought the Republican nomination for the U.S. House of Representatives from New Hampshire's 1st congressional district but lost amid controversy, including criticism from Senator Gordon Humphrey questioning her suitability as a mother of young children for congressional office.
On 4 August 1989, President George H. W. Bush nominated Tamposi as Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs, and after Senate confirmation she assumed the role on 18 October 1989, traveling to 70 countries to assist Americans abroad and streamlining visa and passport processes.
Her tenure ended abruptly on 10 November 1992 when Acting Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger dismissed her amid revelations that State Department officials, including Tamposi, had searched passport files of independent presidential candidate Ross Perot at the request of the Bush reelection campaign; she maintained that her superiors were aware and that she was unfairly targeted.
President Bush later cleared her name in a handwritten note praising her character, and no wrongdoing was found on her part.
In her later career, Elizabeth M. Tamposi worked as a hospital chaplain and spiritual director while involved in family business and legal matters, including disputes over the Tamposi family trusts.
