Emmy Rossum, born Emmanuelle Grey Rossum on September 12, 1986, in New York City, is an American actress and singer-songwriter. Raised by her single mother, Cheryl Rossum, a corporate photographer, she began her professional career as a child with the Metropolitan Opera Children's Chorus.

She performed in over 20 operas in six different languages, sharing the stage with renowned singers like Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti. Her early acting roles included appearances in "Genius" (1999), "Songcatcher" (2000), and "Mystic River" (2003), where she played the ill-fated daughter of a small-business owner.
