Francis Xavier Pierz

American Missionary

Francis Xavier Pierz, born on November 20, 1785, in Godič, Slovenia, was a distinguished Roman Catholic missionary whose work primarily focused on the Ottawa and Ojibwe Indians in present-day Michigan, Wisconsin, Ontario, and Minnesota. Educated bilingually in both Slovenian and German, he was ordained at the age of 27 at Ljubljana Cathedral on March 13, 18131.

His early clerical career saw him serving as an assistant pastor in Slovenia, where he ardently worked to improve the local agrarian conditions. His efforts were so impactful that he published "Kranjski Vertnar" (The Carniolan Gardener) in 1830 and was awarded a medal of honor by the Carniolan Agricultural Society in 1842.

In 1835, inspired by the letters of his fellow Slovenian missionary Frederic Baraga, he ventured to the United States. He began his mission work among the Ottawa Indians at Little Traverse Bay, Michigan, finding success despite initial difficulties with the local dialect. His dedication and persistence led him to Sault Ste. Marie and, later, to various missions around Lake Superior.

His influence grew significantly when he established himself in Crow Wing, Minnesota, in the 1850s. These settlers helped establish Central Minnesota as a significant hub for the Catholic faith, leading him to be fondly remembered as the "Father of the Diocese of Saint Cloud."

Francis Xavier Pierz continued his missionary work tirelessly until his retirement in 1871. He returned to Slovenia in September 1873 to live out his final years and passed away on January 22, 1880.

Even today, he remains a celebrated figure in both his native Slovenia and Minnesota for his extraordinary contributions to spreading Christianity and fostering communities in remote regions.
