Her breakthrough came with her performance in the Off-Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams' "Summer and Smoke" in 1952, which earned her critical acclaim and established her as a leading actress.
Throughout her career, she appeared in numerous films, including "Hondo" (1953), "Summer and Smoke" (1961), "Sweet Bird of Youth" (1962), "You're a Big Boy Now" (1966), "Pete 'n' Tillie" (1972), "Interiors" (1978), and "The Pope of Greenwich Village" (1984). She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in "The Trip to Bountiful" (1985).
She was also known for her work in television, earning two Primetime Emmy Awards for her performances in "A Christmas Memory" (1967) and "The Thanksgiving Visitor" (1969).
Her personal life was marked by her marriages to violinist Alexander Schneider and actor Rip Torn. She married Schneider in 1954, but they divorced in 1957. In 1963, she married Torn, with whom she had three children, including actress Angelica Page.
The couple remained together until Page's death in 1987.
