Gia Scala, born Josephine Grace Johanna Scoglio on March 3, 1934, in Liverpool, England, was a British-American actress of Italian and Irish descent. She moved to Sicily with her aristocratic Sicilian father and Irish mother at three months old. At the age of 14, she moved to New York to live with her aunt and attended Bayside High School in Queens.
While working various jobs, she studied acting with Stella Adler and the Actors Studio.
Her entry into Hollywood came when she was spotted on a television game show by a Universal Studios agent, who signed her to a contract in 1954. She began her career with minor roles but quickly moved up the ladder, earning good notices for her performances.
Her breakthrough role came in "The Guns of Navarone" (1961), where she played the mute Anna, the ill-fated Greek resistance fighter.

She married actor Don Burnett in 1962, but the marriage ended in divorce. Her career declined, and she struggled with mental health issues, leading to frequent psychiatric observations.
On April 30, 1972, Gia Scala was found dead in her Hollywood Hills home from an overdose of alcohol and sleeping pills. She was only 38 years old.
