Raised in a tight-knit Puerto Rican family, she began her career in theater productions before making her screen debut in an episode of "Law & Order" in 2004. Her breakthrough came in 2012 with the independent musical-drama film "Filly Brown."

She has since starred in films such as "Deepwater Horizon," "Ferdinand," "Annihilation," "Miss Bala," and "Someone Great." She also voiced the titular character in the Netflix animated series "Carmen Sandiego" and starred in the Disney+ comedy-drama series "Diary of a Future President."
