She was adopted by the Whitney family, who renamed her Grace Elaine, and she began her entertainment career as a "girl singer" on Detroit's WJR radio at the age of 14.
Grace Lee Whitney later moved to Chicago, where she performed in nightclubs and toured with the Spike Jones and Fred Waring bands.
