Inga Swenson (December 29, 1932 – July 23, 2023) was an American actress and singer renowned for her commanding stage presence and memorable television roles portraying formidable women.

Born in Omaha, Nebraska, to Scandinavian parents - her father an attorney and her mother a homemaker - she developed an early passion for drama, graduating from high school there before attending Northwestern University to study the craft.

Inga Swenson began her professional career in theater, making her Broadway debut in the revue New Faces of 1956, where she showcased her talents as a trained lyric soprano alongside future stars like Maggie Smith.

Her stage career flourished with leading roles that earned critical acclaim and Tony Award nominations for Best Actress in a Musical, first for Lizzie Curry in the 1963 production of 110 in the Shade, a role originated on film by Katharine Hepburn in The Rainmaker, and again in 1965 as Irene Adler in the Sherlock Holmes musical Baker Street.

Her versatility extended to London, where she reprised Lizzie Curry in 110 in the Shade at the Palace Theatre in 1967, solidifying her reputation as a powerful performer capable of blending dramatic depth with vocal prowess.

Transitioning to screen work, Inga Swenson debuted on television in 1957 and appeared in films like Advise & Consent (1962) as a senator's wife and The Miracle Worker (1962) as Helen Keller's mother, roles that highlighted her ability to convey emotional intensity.

Guest spots on series such as Bonanza followed, where she played Inger Cartwright, the mother of Hoss.

Her television breakthrough came in the late 1970s with a recurring role as the vengeful Swedish Ingrid Svenson on the sitcom Soap, paving the way for her iconic portrayal of Gretchen Kraus, the sharp-tongued German housekeeper-turned-administrator on the spin-off Benson from 1979 to 1986, earning three Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

Her later career included notable miniseries roles, such as Maude Hazard in North & South (1985) and its sequel North & South, Book II (1986), and Marilyn Bradshaw Reagan in Nutcracker: Money, Madness, and Murder (1987).

She also voiced Grandma Helga on the animated Life with Louie (1997–1998) and played Connie Stratford on Doctor Doctor (1989–1990). Additional film appearances encompassed Lipstick (1976) and The Mountain Men (1980), while her stage work continued sporadically, reflecting a career spanning over four decades across theater, film, and television.

Inga Swenson largely retired from acting in the 1990s, living quietly in the Los Angeles area until her death at age 90 from natural causes.
