Raised in New York City, she attended the fashionable Chapin School and later Barnard College, though she left after two years to join the apprentice school of the Berkshire Playhouse in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.
Jane Wyatt made her Broadway debut as an understudy in "Trade Winds," a role that cost her her listing in the New York Social Register, though she was later relisted upon her marriage.
Her film career began in 1934 with her debut in "One More River," directed by James Whale. She gained significant recognition for her role as Sondra in Frank Capra's "Lost Horizon" (1937).
Throughout her career, she appeared in films such as "Gentleman's Agreement" (1947) with Gregory Peck, "None but the Lonely Heart" (1944) with Cary Grant, and "Boomerang" (1947) with Dana Andrews.
In television, Jane Wyatt is best remembered for her role as Margaret Anderson on the classic sitcom "Father Knows Best" (1954-1960), for which she won three consecutive Emmy Awards.
