Jean Peters

American Actress

Elizabeth Jean Peters was born on October 15, 1926, in East Canton, Ohio, and grew up on a small farm. She was the eldest daughter of Elizabeth Thomas and Gerald Peters, a laundry manager. After her father's death when she was ten, her mother ran a tourist camp, which helped finance Jean's education.

She attended East Canton High School and later went to the University of Michigan and Ohio State University, where she studied literature and won the Miss Ohio State Pageant in 1945. This victory included a screen test with 20th Century-Fox, leading her to drop out of college to pursue acting.

Jean Peters signed a seven-year contract with 20th Century-Fox in 1947 and made her film debut in "Captain from Castile" (1947) opposite Tyrone Power. She was known for her roles in period dramas and Westerns, often playing strong, unglamorous characters.

Despite her success, she resisted being turned into a sex symbol and preferred roles that were down-to-earth. She was married three times, first to Stuart W. Cramer III, then to Howard Hughes, and finally to Stan Hough.
