She began her career in Hollywood after being crowned Miss Little Rock in 1946 and moved to California to pursue acting. Initially billed as Julia Adams, she later preferred the name Julie Adams.

Her early roles included parts in B-movie Westerns, but she soon gained recognition for her performances in more prominent films.

One of her most iconic roles was as the beautiful ichthyologist Kay Lawrence in the 1954 horror film "Creature from the Black Lagoon," where she starred opposite Richard Carlson.
