Kathrin Romany Beckinsale, known as Kate Beckinsale, was born on July 26, 1973, in London, England. She is the only child of actors Richard Beckinsale and Judy Loe.

Her father, Richard, was a well-known actor who starred in popular British television comedies during the 1970s, while her mother, Judy, has appeared in numerous British dramas and sitcoms. Tragically, Kate lost her father at the age of five when he passed away suddenly from a heart attack.

Kate Beckinsale attended the private school Godolphin and Latymer School in London. During her teens, she won the British bookseller W.H. Smith Young Writers' competition twice, once for three short stories and once for three poems.

She also battled anorexia during her adolescence but overcame it. She began her acting career with a TV film about World War II called One Against the Wind in 1991. She then attended Oxford University's New College, where she studied French and Russian literature.

While at Oxford, she received her big break in Kenneth Branagh's film adaptation of William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing in 1993.

Kate Beckinsale established herself in leading roles in numerous British costume dramas such as Prince of Jutland, Cold Comfort Farm, Emma, and The Golden Bowl. She also appeared in films like The Last Days of Disco, Brokedown Palace, Pearl Harbor, Serendipity, Tiptoes, The Aviator, and Click.

She became widely known for her role as Selene in the Underworld film series, which spanned from 2003 to 2016. She also starred in action films like Van Helsing, Whiteout, Contraband, Total Recall, and Jolt.

Furthermore, she earned acclaim for her roles in Snow Angels, Nothing but the Truth, Everybody's Fine, Love & Friendship, and The Only Living Boy in New York.

Kate Beckinsale has received various accolades throughout her career, including a Saturn Award, two MTV Movie Awards, two Critics' Choice Awards, and two National Film Awards UK. In recent years, she returned to television with the limited series The Widow and the short-lived dramedy Guilty Party, where she also served as an executive producer.

Kate Beckinsale has a daughter named Lily Mo Sheen, born in 1999, from her relationship with actor Michael Sheen. She was married to director Len Wiseman from 2004 to 2019.
