She began her career as a ballet dancer at the age of 14, training at the School of American Ballet. Her Broadway debut came in 1963 with the musical "110 in the Shade," and she quickly gained recognition for her role in the television musical production of "Cinderella" in 1965.

Her early career included starring roles in Disney musical films such as "The Happiest Millionaire" (1967) and "The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band" (1968).

In the 1970s, she transitioned to television, receiving a Golden Globe nomination for her role in the CBS drama series "Mission: Impossible" (1970-1971). She won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Series for the NBC miniseries "Harold Robbins' 79 Park Avenue" in 1978.

Her career continued to flourish in the 1980s, with an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Victor/Victoria" (1982). She also received Golden Globe nominations for her performances in "Songwriter" (1984) and "Family of Spies" (1990).
