Marian Seldes, born Marian Hall Seldes on August 23, 1928, in New York City, was an American actress renowned for her distinguished career on stage, screen, and radio. She was the daughter of writer and journalist Gilbert Seldes and socialite Alice Wadhams Hall, and her uncle was journalist George Seldes.
Marian Seldes grew up in a creative environment, studying drama at the Neighborhood Playhouse with Sanford Meisner and dance with Martha Graham. She honed her craft with the legendary Broadway diva, Katharine Cornell, with whom she appeared in the play "That Lady" in the 1949-50 season.
Marian Seldes made her Broadway debut in 1948 in Robinson Jeffers' adaptation of "Medea," directed by John Gielgud, who also played Jason. It began a career that lasted 59 years, during which she was nominated for a Tony Award five times, winning on her first nod for Edward Albee's "A Delicate Balance" in 1967.
She was also nominated for her performances in "Father's Day" (1971), "Deathtrap" (1978-82), "Ring Round the Moon" (1999), and "Dinner at Eight" (2002). She was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1995 and received the Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2010.
