Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson, known as Mel Gibson, was born on January 3, 1956, in Peekskill, New York. He is an American actor, director, and producer.

His parents are Hutton Gibson, a writer, and Anne Patricia, who was born in Ireland. Mel is the sixth of eleven children. When he was twelve, his family moved to Sydney, Australia. He studied acting at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney.
