Her father's involvement with Scientology influenced her upbringing, and the family moved frequently before settling in Los Angeles. She graduated from high school at the age of 14 and later worked as a social worker before pursuing acting.

Her acting career began in the early 1980s with guest spots on shows like "Hill Street Blues" and "Magnum, P.I." Her first significant film role came in the 1986 comedy "Gung Ho," where she starred alongside Michael Keaton.
