Her parents separated when she was very young, and she was raised by her mother and stepfather, Loyal Davis, a prominent neurosurgeon, who later adopted her. She attended the Girls' Latin School of Chicago and later Smith College in Massachusetts, where she majored in drama.
Before becoming First Lady, Nancy Davis Reagan was a successful actress in Hollywood, known for her roles in films such as "The Next Voice You Hear..." (1950) and "Hellcats of the Navy" (1957), the latter of which she starred alongside her future husband, Ronald Reagan.
