While vacationing in Hollywood at the age of 18, she was spotted by producer Hal B. Wallis, who arranged for her to take a screen test. This led to her being cast in the film "Summer and Smoke" (1961), which earned her Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Most Promising Newcomer.
Her early film career included roles in "One, Two, Three" (1961) directed by Billy Wilder, and the musical remake "State Fair" (1962). She continued to work in both film and television throughout the 1960s, appearing in movies like "The Pleasure Seekers" (1964), "Come Fly with Me" (1963), and "Harper" (1966).
