Her father, Thomas Wesley "Jack" Overall Jr., was a federal magistrate judge, and her mother, Frances Overall, was an English professor. Her passion for acting began at a young age, and she performed in local theater productions before moving to New York City to pursue a professional acting career.

Her acting career began with roles in off-off-Broadway productions, including "Skin," a play centered around Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick. She made her Broadway debut as Rowena in Neil Simon's "Biloxi Blues" and reprised the role in the film adaptation. 

Her breakthrough role came in the popular TV series "Empty Nest," which aired from 1988 to 1995. She portrayed Laverne Higby Todd Kane, a nurse with a deadpan sense of humor, earning her critical acclaim and several award nominations. She also appeared in the early episodes of the spinoff series "Nurses" and starred in other television shows like "Katie Joplin" and "Ladies Man."
