Patricia Wettig attended Ohio Wesleyan University and later graduated from Temple University with a degree in drama. She furthered her education by earning a Master of Fine Arts in playwriting from Smith College in 2001.

She began her career on stage, working as a personal dresser for Shirley MacLaine and performing with New York's Circle Repertory Company. Her television career took off with roles in popular 1980s dramas such as "Remington Steele," "Hill Street Blues," and "L.A. Law".

She gained widespread recognition for her role as Nancy Weston in the television series "Thirtysomething" (1987-1991), for which she won three Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award.

After "Thirtysomething," she appeared in several films, including "Guilty by Suspicion" (1991) starring Robert De Niro, and the comedy films "City Slickers" (1991) and "City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold" (1994). She also starred in made-for-television movies like "Taking Back My Life: The Nancy Ziegenmeyer Story" (1992) and "Parallel Lives" (1994).
