Phylicia Rashad, born Phylicia Ayers-Allen on June 19, 1948, in Houston, Texas, is an accomplished American actress, singer, and director. Her mother, Vivian Ayers, was a Pulitzer Prize-nominated artist, poet, playwright, and publisher, while her father, Andrew Arthur Allen, was an orthodontist.
Phylicia Rashad has two siblings: her brother Tex, a jazz musician, and her sister Debbie Allen, an actress, choreographer, and director. Their parents divorced when Rashad was six, and her mother moved with the two sisters to Mexico City to escape segregation in the United States.
She studied at Howard University, graduating magna cum laude in 1970 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She made her Broadway debut in the Melvin Van Peebles musical "Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death" in 1971.
Throughout the 1970s, she appeared in several Broadway productions, including "Dreamgirls," where she played Deena Jones. In 1982, she landed a regular role on the daytime soap opera "One Life to Live" before being cast as Clair Huxtable on the iconic sitcom "The Cosby Show" in 1984.
