Phylicia Rashad, born Phylicia Ayers-Allen on June 19, 1948, in Houston, Texas, is an accomplished American actress, singer, and director. Her mother, Vivian Ayers, was a Pulitzer Prize-nominated artist, poet, playwright, and publisher, while her father, Andrew Arthur Allen, was an orthodontist.

Phylicia Rashad has two siblings: her brother Tex, a jazz musician, and her sister Debbie Allen, an actress, choreographer, and director. Their parents divorced when Rashad was six, and her mother moved with the two sisters to Mexico City to escape segregation in the United States.

She studied at Howard University, graduating magna cum laude in 1970 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She made her Broadway debut in the Melvin Van Peebles musical "Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death" in 1971.

Throughout the 1970s, she appeared in several Broadway productions, including "Dreamgirls," where she played Deena Jones. In 1982, she landed a regular role on the daytime soap opera "One Life to Live" before being cast as Clair Huxtable on the iconic sitcom "The Cosby Show" in 1984.

Her portrayal of Clair, the graceful and assertive matriarch of the Huxtable family, earned her two Primetime Emmy Award nominations and solidified her place in television history.

Her career extends beyond television, with notable performances on Broadway, including her Tony Award-winning role in the revival of "A Raisin in the Sun" in 2004, making her the first Black actress to win the award.

She reprised this role in a 2008 television adaptation, winning an NAACP Image Award. Her other Broadway credits include "Into the Woods," "Jelly's Last Jam," "Gem of the Ocean," and "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof."

In the film industry, Phylicia  Rashad has appeared in movies such as "For Colored Girls" (2010), "Good Deeds" (2012), and the "Creed" series, where she played the mother of the protagonist, Adonis Creed.

She also voiced Brenda Glover on the Nick Jr. animated children's educational television series "Little Bill" from 1999 to 2004. In recent years, she has directed revivals of three plays by August Wilson in major theaters across the United States.

Her personal life includes three marriages. She was first married to William Lancelot Bowles Jr., a dentist, in 1972, and they had a son, William Lancelot Bowles III. They divorced in 1975.

Her second marriage was to Victor Willis, the lead singer of The Village People, in 1978, but they divorced in 1982. Her third marriage was to sports broadcaster Ahmad Rashad in 1985, and they had a daughter, Condola Rashad. The couple divorced in 2001.

Her contributions to the arts have been recognized with numerous awards, including two Tony Awards, two NAACP Image Awards, and a BET Honors Theatrical Arts Award.
