She was the first of three daughters born to Lois Marion Seacat and Russell Henry Seacat. Sandra attended Northwestern University, where she focused on method acting, and later moved to New York to study with Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio.

She made her Broadway debut in 1964 in Anton Chekhov's "Three Sisters," directed by Strasberg.
