Sarah Joy Brown was born on February 18, 1975, in Los Angeles, California, and began her artistic training at the Los Angeles County High School for the Performing Arts, graduating from both its theatre department and Alexander Hamilton's Academy of Music.

Her professional acting career launched on her nineteenth birthday when she was cast as the lead Kaitlin Star on the children's action series V.R. Troopers, which aired in over thirty countries and introduced her to an international audience.

Two years later, at age twenty-one, she landed the breakout role of Carly Corinthos on ABC's General Hospital in 1996, portraying the complex, fiery character with emotional intensity that earned critical praise and resulted in three Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series before her twenty-fifth birthday, along with four nominations during her initial five-year run from 1996 to 2001.​

After departing General Hospital, Sarah Joy Brown expanded into primetime television, becoming a series regular as Josie Sutton on Cold Case in 2003 and guest-starring on acclaimed shows including CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Monk, Without a Trace, and Crossing Jordan.
