Sophia Takal is an American actress, writer, and director, born on May 12, 1986, in Montclair, New Jersey. She studied film at Vassar College before graduating from Barnard College.

Sophia Takal is perhaps best known for her work in independent features such as "All the Light in the Sky," "Supporting Characters," and "Gabi on the Roof in July." Filmmaker magazine named her one of the "25 New Faces of Film" in 2011.

Her career began in earnest in 2009, and she has since worked on and starred in numerous independent films. Some of her notable works include "Green," which she directed and wrote, and "Always Shine," a film that stars Mackenzie Davis and Caitlin FitzGerald.

She and her husband, Lawrence Michael Levine, operate a production company called Little Teeth Pictures. Sophia Takal is married to Lawrence Michael Levine, a filmmaker with whom she frequently collaborates.

They met while he was her teaching assistant at Columbia University. Together, they have worked on several projects, including "Gabi on the Roof in July" and "Green."

Her directorial efforts have been well-received, with her first film, "Green," winning the Chicken and Egg Emergent Narrative Woman Director prize at the South by Southwest Festival in 2011. She also directed and co-wrote the 2019 remake of the 1974 horror film "Black Christmas."
