Theresa Merritt, born on September 24, 1922, in Emporia, Virginia, was an accomplished American actress and singer known for her extensive work in theater, television, and film. She gained widespread recognition for her role as Eloise "Mama" Curtis in the television sitcom "That's My Mama" during the mid-1970s and for her memorable film performances as Aunt Em in the 1978 movie adaptation of "The Wiz" and as Juanita in the 1995 comedy "Billy Madison."

Early in her career, she was distinguished for her stage work, notably earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress for her portrayal of Ma Rainey in August Wilson's "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom." She was also notable for replacing Mabel King as Evillene in the Broadway production of "The Wiz," although she left the role citing harm to her voice.

Throughout her career, she appeared in a variety of Broadway productions, including "Mule Bone," "Division Street," "Don't Play Us Cheap!," "The Crucible," "Trumpets of the Lord," and "Golden Boy," among others. She also toured extensively with road companies of acclaimed musicals like "Funny Girl," "Show Boat," and "South Pacific."
