Vanessa Williams

American singer and actress

Vanessa Williams was born on March 18, 1963, in Tarrytown, New York, and raised in Millwood, New York. She is the daughter of Helen and Milton Williams, both of whom were music teachers.

She showed an early interest in music and performing, often participating in school productions. She attended Syracuse University, where she majored in musical theatre arts. Her career took off when she won the Miss America title in 1983, becoming the first African-American woman to do so. However, she resigned the title a few months later due to a controversy involving nude photographs published in Penthouse magazine.

Despite the setback, she rebounded and launched a successful career as a singer and actress. Her debut album, "The Right Stuff," was released in 1988 and included the hit single "Dreamin'," which peaked at number 8 on the US charts.

She continued to achieve commercial success with her second and third albums, "The Comfort Zone" (1991) and "The Sweetest Days" (1994). Her signature song, "Save the Best for Last," became a number-one hit and earned her multiple Grammy Award nominations.
