Zayn Malik, born Zain Javadd Malik on January 12, 1993, in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, is a British singer and songwriter. He is the son of Yaser Malik, an immigrant Pakistani Muslim, and Trisha Malik, a White British woman of English and Irish descent who converted to Islam upon marriage.
Zayn Malik has one older sister, Doniya, and two younger sisters, Waliyha and Safaa. He grew up in East Bowling, Bradford, in a working-class family and attended Lower Fields Primary School and Tong High School.
He auditioned as a solo contestant for the British music competition television series The X Factor in 2010. Although he was eliminated, he was brought back to form the five-piece boy band One Direction. The group became one of the best-selling boy bands of all time.
Zayn Malik left One Direction in March 2015 and signed a solo recording contract with RCA Records. His first solo studio album, Mind of Mine, was released in 2016, featuring the lead single "Pillowtalk." This album made him the first British male artist to debut at number one in both the UK and US with his debut single and album. He released his second studio album, Icarus Falls, in 2018, followed by his third album, Nobody Is Listening, in 2021.
